We had to get a room intended for a "single" for
-TWO ADULTS,
-TWO CHILDREN AND
-ONE (of our) service DOGS (we had both dogs there for one of the weeks)
for the safety of the children. Why?
-One of the girls can.NOT.co-sleep with anyone. (minimum of three beds would be required)
-Neither of the girls can sleep on the same SIDE OF THE ROOM as the other. (some kind of barrier between the two is better, if they can see each other, things can get... interesting)
-The girls may not be in a (any) room together without an ("experienced") adult. (they only pretend to get along perfectly and are super charming (to the uninitiated) and will manipulate, sneak, steel, cheat, lie, etc. if the person in charge don't know better and pay (enough) attention)
The only (feasible) option to keep the girls safe and out of the smoke was the one single room and sleeping bags for the girls. Sally made sure everyone felt safe by cycling from person to person all night long. Things we promised the girls were that this would be a pain but it could be fun, and it was kind of exciting, and we would make it through, and they could handle it.
The past month+:
Week one: You're camping!!! On the floor of the hotel! It has air-conditioning!!! Because we're evacuated because of the fire because Sunshine can't breath the smoke because it'll cause her lungs to fill up with snot-like-goo and she'll get really sick. This is going to be a fun, exiting, adventure!
Week two: You're camping on the floor of the hotel because of the fire because Sunshine can't breath the smoke because it'll cause her lungs to fill up with snot and she'll get really sick! This a fun adventure!
Week three: You're on the floor of the hotel, at least it has an air-conditioning, because of smoke from the fire and goo in Sunshine's lungs. It's... an adventure.
Week Four: Still on the floor. Of the hotel. Stupid fire! Can't it snow already? It's 100degrees and I LOVE air-conditioning!!! When we find a new place to live, can it have air-conditioning? But... I wish we could bring our old beds to the new place to live instead of just sleeping bags. They're NOT as comfortable. I miss my bed. My bed was soft and fluffy and awesome. I DO NOT LIKE hitting my head on that corner and... sister... can't you just... GO AWAY for like... a little while... because I REALLY need some time with NOT YOU. There is air-conditioning!!! Our car broke down so we can't go to therapies or... ya know, other food...
It was a looooong week.
A very. long. hot. week.
but it only takes three days to decide that our car just didn't like the heat that one, first really, truly, hot day. At least GrandpaJ came to visit and MommaT got a rental car for a few days so she could get to the doctors for IV meds for 5 days because, you know, this is the perfect time for MS to be a b.... ... yeah so,
The girls DO NOT LIKE sharing GrandpaJ. Sunshine HATES that Fe (has RAD) acted like he'd been her grandpa forever even though she NEVER met him before (visits with my dad are ex.trem.ly rare and special).
The "humane society" that promised to keep our cats "as long as we needed, (even though we discussed more than once that it will be longer than most other people, with us because of special circumstances)" until we are able to return home or to a stable place to live; threatens to sell our cats if we do not pick them up in the next three hours. (I'm sorry your hotel is twenty miles away and your car is broken down. I know that you have been calling regularly to let us know what's up, and that nothing is going well for your family who is still living in a hotel, that sucks. Be here by 7 or they'll go up for adoption tomorrow) Our children unite to end the HS if they don't GIVE THEM BACK their cats (UncleT picked up the cats, HS is still standing.)
Well, GrandpaJ came to visit... That was fun and exciting!
Week Five: Isn't the fire out yet? WHY NOT??? Our backs hurt from sleeping on the floor, and we want to run and play outside but it's TOO HOT. Other kids get soda, and three happy meals a day and their parents take them to the lake and swimming and ice cream. every. Day. This is not fun or exciting anymore. and this "adventure"? It sucks.
Week six: We're going home. There's no food. (We (and by "we" I mean UncleT, who was pretty awesome during this mess) had to throw everything in the fridge and freezer away because the power got cut for either a few hours or over a full day, no say of actually how long, but everything got ruined. There's no air-conditioner. It's still nearing 100*. There's no air-conditioner. But we're going HOME!!!! To our BEDS!!! NO SLEEPING BAGS! And our cats and our Jackson.
The girls love their beds and bedrooms and not eating pizza or fast food every meal. And more clothes options are fun!
I love VEGETABLES!!! Our second night home, I made a pack of Ramen noodles and about two cups of veggies (okra, peas, carrots, spinach, corn) and lots of seasoning (NO more salt)! The girls loved home-made (ahem... boxed, store brand, but it got MADE at HOME) mac'n'cheese with lots of mixed veggies.
Our cats love having us home and love being home.
The second day home, we went down to move storage units. MommaT fit everything into one, well stacked with the kids sitting cross-leg, into the van. We got all the way to the more distant town, the van started running a little week. Our (fully loaded, with the whole family) CAR BROKE DOWN AGAIN. We had to spend three hours waiting for it to cool down because it was 100* again outside. I swear we were positive we were gonna die of heat stroke.
It's going to be $649 and some change (no, literally, like 50 cents or something), but we should get it back on Monday with a shiny new fuel pump and a few other things (I think. It's hot here. My brain is boycotting and will come back when we're living in an air conditioned house again.)
