We have moved. Telephone company "P" spent the past month telling us that we can't have DSL/high speed internet here.
A year ago, we would have said OK and searched for every possible method we could use to be able to complete the move and keep Sunshine in homeschool. When that failed, we would have shown more interest in the backup homes available and would have either picked a different place to live or decided to put her in the (tiny) local public school, at least a twenty minute drive away, longer on the bus.
Luckily, a year has passed and we are less naive, and more determined. We called back. We called back... We talked to so many supervisors that our names are probably tagged for "immediate escalation". We got names of everyone we could who lives in our area, and asked "P" to please, call them, and tell them that they have to find a different service, because they "can't have DSL where they live". "P" pulled up all of the files and discovered that !!!DSL is available where we live now!!! OK... so... well... we can have DSL, but it's $100 for the modem that can handle the (get this, because it's rich) 12mb speed that we have to get and it's another $100 for the tech to come set it up in our house. Wait a minute... are you telling me that you can't to charge me $100 for a new modem to have the internet that I "can't get where I live" and then another $100 for a trained monkey to come to our house, put a disk into OUR computers, and hit "go"??? Uhm ya, Idon'tthinksobob.
Today...
We bought the modem, after the other one didn't work. Then (an this is crazy amazing) we put this round thing, that was shiny on one side, an' had a hole in the middle, into our computer's mouth, and then clicked on the magic button that said "next" over and over, and typed in the answers to these questions, and more "next"s, and... well, you know what? not only did we have internet access, but we don't even have to have one of those fancy cords plugged into it for it to work - we don't even have to be in the same room as the magic internet box!!!
Anyways, sarcasm aside, we have internet access again!
